Grant Achenbach is an Associate attorney and lobbyist in the firm’s Governmental Affairs and Public Advocacy Practice. Mr. Achenbach represents the firm’s clients before the Indiana General Assembly and state administrative agencies, advising clients on legislative and executive branch lobbying strategy, policy development, and coalition building. His lobbying experience has involved a wide array of health care issues, including medical malpractice liability, telehealth, employment contracting, health insurance matters, scope of practice and licensure, and health care price transparency requirements.  

Prior to joining Krieg DeVault, Mr. Achenbach served as the Director of Government Relations for the Indiana State Medical Association (ISMA). While at the ISMA, he represented the interests of Indiana’s physicians and physician groups and was responsible for developing and implementing the ISMA’s yearly legislative agenda. Mr. Achenbach also advocated for ISMA’s physician members before the Indiana Professional Licensing Agency, the Indiana Department of Insurance, the Family and Social Services Administration, the Indiana Department of Health, and other state agencies. He began his career as a legislative assistant for the Indiana House of Representatives, where he staffed the House Public Health Committee and analyzed Public Health Committee bills and testimony.
 

Representative Experience

  • ​​​​​​After working extensively on Indiana’s initial telehealth legislation during his time on House staff, Grant successfully advocated for amendments to Indiana’s telehealth statute in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic that extended many flexibilities for health care providers put into place through executive orders during the public health emergency.
  • Successfully advocated for the passage of comprehensive COVID-19 civil immunity legislation that created protections for physicians and other health care providers.
  • Led a coalition of physician specialty organizations’ lobbying efforts in numerous negotiations regarding scope of practice legislation. Ultimately, this work led to the formation of the Indiana Physician Coalition, a statewide coalition of thirteen medical associations and specialty societies.
